When the first Shake Shack opened in NYC’s Madison Square Park, the idea was to create a seasonal food stand serving simple but high quality eats, with proceeds going to support the surrounding park. It was a good one that resulted in queues for hours at the original stand from the early 2000s, and now more than 200 restaurants worldwide, including Shanghai’s first location in Xintiandi.

The Shanghai restaurant's got all the stuff that got Shake Shack famous (the hot dogs) but the showstopper here is the Shackburger (47RMB) with melted cheese, tomato and lettuce that’s almost too simple to be as good as it is. Pair it with crinkle-cut fries and beers custom-made for Shake Shack by Brooklyn Brewery (Boxing Cat is also available on tap for Shanghai loyalists). But don't get too full before trying their Shanghai-exclusive concretes, one of them a store favourite for its rich chocolatey flavours (Shack Attack). Not a fan of chocolate? Head to Shake Shack's new branch in Jingan for more choices.
