Leaving Flair, walk towards the river and south along the waterfront. If you’re thirsty, you can merge with the cheapskates’ cruise and head to either Paulaner or grab a drink at City Super for the Ferry ride to Jinling Dong Lu Pier. Once the ferry docks on the Puxi side of the river, walk along The Bund and turn left onto Yanan Lu. Catch the lift at 7 Yanan Lu to the seventh floor and you’ll have arrived at one of the best new terrace bars by The Bund, Shen. Check out our review of Shen for what to order.

Shen is at Yanan Dong Lu near Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu. See full address details.

3. Bar Rouge

The drinks are pricey and the atmosphere exclusive, as it should be for this route. If you can't decide what to order, take advice from a top Bar Rouge bartender.

1. Paulaner

1.-Paulaner---crop

Having taken the metro to Lujiazui, head towards the Huangpu on Lujiazui Xi Lu. Out the back of Super Brand Mall, turn left onto Fucheng Lu and cut through Binjiang Park south along the river until you hit Paulaner. This isn’t the cheapest of options to start your cruise, but the view and atmosphere are worth it. If you really can’t spare 50RMB for a beer, never fear; there are also a few convenience stores along Fucheng Lu that sell crazy cheap cans of Tsingtao and Suntory (from 5-10RMB).

Paulaner Brauhaus is on Riverside Promenade, Binjiang Dadao, near Fucheng Lu. See full address details.

2. City Shop

2.-City-Shop---crop

Walk back east to Fucheng Lu, where you’ll hit City Shop – the perfect stop for both edible and drinkable refreshment. Here you can nab Coronas for 12RMB, Tsingtao for 6RMB a bottle or 4.80RMB a can, or a bottle of white wine for 80RMB. Stock up here for the upcoming ferry ride; they’ll even open your bottles for you. On the way to the Dongchang Lu Ferry Station (2RMB each way with your transport card), there’s also a cart selling jianbing for 4RMB, and you can add an egg for 2RMB – cheap and cheerful.

City Shop is on first floor, Citigroup Tower, 33 Huayuanshiqiao Lu, near Fucheng Lu. See full address details.

3. Captain’s Bar

3.-Captain's-bar---crop

Take the ferry to Jinling Dong Lu and walk up The Bund until you get to Fuzhou Lu. Head to number 37, Captain’s Hostel. With a great view across to Lujiazui, this is a classic hot spot for those on a budget on The Bund. Pick up a dry Martini for 50RMB at happy hour, 5-8pm on Monday-Thursday, and sit back and revel in affordability.

Captain’s Bar is on 37 Fuzhou Lu, near Sichuan Zhong Lu. See full address details.

4. Waitan Yard

Heading out onto Fuzhou Lu, take a left toward Sichuan Zhong Lu. Just around the corner you’ll hit the entrance to the newly-opened Waitan Yard. Take the stairs up to the third floor and chill out on the rooftop with urban views over Huangpu district. This place is even better if you can go during happy hour (5-7pm, Tuesday-Friday) when beers, house wines and select cocktails are buy-one-get-one-free. Beers start around 48RMB and cocktails are around 78RMB.

Waitan Yard is at 166 Sichuan Zhong Lu, near Fuzhou Lu. See full address details.

5. North Bund Park

6.-Pre-Ferry-North-Bund-Park-0--crop

Leaving the comfort of Waitan Yard, head back towards The Bund and continue north. There’s a bit of a walk if you’ve made it this far, so grab some roadies and pick up the pace. After crossing Waibaidu Bridge, turn right onto Huangpu Lu, past the comforts of Hyatt on the Bund. There’s an AllDays on the corner of Qingpu Lu if you’re feeling thirsty, and while you’re here you may as well grab a couple of drinks for when you hit the upcoming park. There’s a bit of construction going on in this area, but persevere until you hit the North Bund Green Land. Take one of the river-facing public benches and enjoy the natural surrounds with one of the best views over to Pudong.

6. Riverside bench

7.-Bench-0---crop

Once you’ve had your fill of fun around the north Bund, exit via the Shanghai International Cruise Terminal with its distinctive dangling pods. Make sure you stop by Quik (and the public toilet) in the basement and pick up some more refreshment for the ferry and your next stop. Exit via Dongdaming Lu and walk until you get to Gongping Lu, turn left and you’ll reach the ferry stop which will take you back to Taitongzhan Pier in Pudong. The ferry leaves around every 20 minutes from 7am-7pm and arrives at Binjiang Avenue. Once you alight, walk back towards Lujiazui and enjoy the green riverside parkland with plenty of grass to sprawl on and the prime seats opposite The Bund.
